Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation

Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation – A shooting on the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation this morning has left one man dead, as RCMP still search the area for the shooter asking residents to stay indoors. According to various news reports and official RCMP reports, the man was fatally shot near the health centre, and someone was seen driving away on an ATV near the scene.

RezX recently talked to a woman through our facebook page, who asked not to be named. She is currently one of many people told to stay in doors in the community, until RCMP say its safe.

“This whole situation is horrible”.

“I believe there are 4 or 5 RCMP surrounding the area by what is called Lovers Lane (it’s by the lake behind the water pump house where the shooting took place. The victim was shot on his door step)”.

“I’m just scared right now and we live 5 mins away from where it’s taking place”.

APTN reported earlier that, “The alleged shooter is in his mid-50s and on the loose. According to resident Kim Sasakamoose, the shooting happened around 10 a.m. and the alleged shooter is her cousin, “Chucky” Sasakamoose. “They tried to bring him back to life,” said Kim Sasakamoose of the victim, who she identified as Wayne and being new to the community. The shooting happened near the health centre. Kim Sasakamoose said she heard the shooting was over a woman. “He took off on his quad,” said Kim Sasakamoose of her cousin. “We’re told to lock our doors.

Here’s the latest update from Saskatchewan RCMP’s Facebook Page:

UPDATE: Just before 10:00 a.m. today, Shellbrook RCMP received several calls regarding an individual discharging a firearm near the health center on Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation. A male dressed in camouflage and operating an all-terrain vehicle fled the area. It has not been confirmed if this individual is associated to the incident. The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made and no charges have been laid at this time. Shellbrook detachment began a swift and immediate deployment of members to the area along with members from Big River, Prince Albert and Spiritwood RCMP Detachments. RCMP Police Dog Services, Emergency Response Team, Major Crime Unit North and Forensic Identification section are assisting. We can confirm that one adult male is deceased as a result of the incident. We will not be identifying the deceased at this time. The RCMP has not received any other reports of injured people at this time. We want to stress that public safety is our priority and we are asking residents of Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation to please stay inside their residences. Please remember that this is an active, ongoing situation and when we have updates, we will provide them. ‪#‎SKRCMP‬ ^cs
