INM: Year in Review – Timeline

Idle No More started because 4 women met and decided they would not sit idly by as the Feds tried to push C-45 through the legislature. What started out as a small localized protest soon became national as the rest of Indigenous Canada resonated with their sentiments. Below is a timeline of year 1’s events.

Nov 10, 2012 – First protest over Bill C45 (Saskatoon)

Dec 10, 2012 – First National protest (Regina’s first protest)

Dec 11, 2012 – Theresa Spence begins her hunger strike (last 45 days)

Dec 17, 2012 – Regina does the first ‘flash mob round dance’ (followed by Edmonton)

Dec 21, 2012 – National INM protest in Ottawa

Jan 11, 2013 – Global day of Action (over 300 events) – Chiefs get meeting with PMO

Jan 16, 2013 – Journey of the Nishyuu to Ottawa begins (they meet w/ Justin Trudeau on March 25)

Jan 28, 2013 – Global day of action – resurgence of Indigenous Rights

Feb 27, 2013 – Tom Flanagan confronted by INM supporters ending his political career

March 17, 2013 – INM protest to support Peepeekisis not signing the Contribution Agreement

April 3, 2013 – Nanaimo paper is taken to task for printing racist editorial

June 3, 2013 – INM starts webinar sessions to hear various speakers across the country

June 5, 2013 – FIPPA court challenge protest in BC by the Hupacasath

June 13, 2013 – First protest in solidarity with Elsipogtog is held

June 21, 2013 – Sovereignty Summer campaign between INM and Defenders of the Land begins/Huge Ottawa protest

July 4, 2013 – Oskapewis walkers are hosted in Regina – as they head to the water supply in Hinton

July 22, 2013 – INM pledges local support to the Regina Water Watch Campaign

July 25, 2013 – INM supports a protest called ‘honor the apology’ for the Federal Government

Aug 18, 2013 – INM supports the Metis Rally in Regina North Central

Sept 17, 2013 – INM supports Marilyn Wapass case vs. Thunderchild court case

Oct 7, 2013 – National Day of Action for Indigenous Sovereignty (Regina Flash Mob Round Dance)

Oct 17, 2013 – National support for Elsipogtog community vs. Fracking (3 events in Regina area)

Nov 10, 2013 – Winnipeg hosts a 1 year medicine walk for INM

Nov 16, 2013 – INM & Allies National Protest ‘Defend our Climate, Defend our Communities’

Dec 10, 2013 – INM U of R ‘Red Talks’ – 1 year INM celebration in Regina
