RezX Recipes: NDN Steak Sandwiches
Tired of using all those european-inspired recipes seen on other websites? Boooooring! Well here at RezX, we have something better with our new section, RezX Recipes!
Every week or so, we will give you a new step by step recipe on how to make the best First Nations food or as we call it NDN Food. To begin, RezX’s Chef (not Chief) Editor Chris Tyrone Ross put together this amazing recipe of “NDN Steak Sandwiches” for all you bachelors out there and families who are looking for a cheap way to make supper.
NDN Steak Sandwiches will feed your spirit and make you feel like a real warrior from back in the day. This specific recipe was passed down from generation to generation going as far back as pre-colonial days. At the time, there wasn’t a lot of bulls or cows going around, but there were a lot of pigs. In fact, our people used to sneak up on these herds of pigs and hunt them down. Then at night, they would make this exact recipe and sing songs and dance pow wow around the camp fire celebrating their kill. Okay I might have made up that last part, but I did not make up this recipe as it was really passed down.
Today, the recipe lives on! So here’s a quick easy step by step recipe on making NDN steak sandwiches to make for your family and friends! Read the captions on each picture to follow the recipe.
Ingredients:
– 1 slab of balogna
– 1 bag of fry bread
– Salt n pepper
– Ketchup
– Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce
– Cheese
– 1 Onion
- First the main ingredients, a big slab of bologna steak and fry bread, which you can make yourself or buy at Creeland Gas Station here in Regina
- to prepare you have to slice that bologna into thick slices
- now slice those onions, this is a good time to let out your emotions and cry about something, people will think its the onions
- make sure the fryer is at medium and throw in those onions first
- now fry up those onions…
- cover and make those onions have a “sweat”
- while the onions are enjoying their sweat lodge, slice up some cheese and put aside
- also its a good time to slice that fry bread evenly…put aside
- while those onions cook, add you slabs of bologna steak
- mmmmm….yummy
- give them some time until you flip, this is the part where the bologna becomes NDN steak
- while all that good stuff is happening in the pan, butter up your fry bread
- My favourite BBQ sauce is called Sweet Baby Ray’s – The Sauce is Boss!
- now take out the onions, they should be done…then add bbq sauce on your NDN steak
- brush that juicy sweet baby ray’s sauce using only a spoon, because I know most of you don’t have a bbq brush lol
- and now throw on that bannock to toast it
- add the cheese slices and let them melt away
- take off the ndn steak and now toast the rest of your fry bread
- this is how your fry bread should look after, nice and brown and toasty like your fat pow wow buddy everyone has lol
- add ketchup, the onions and some salt n pepper
- now add your ndn steak
- …and voila!!! It is done, add some salad to balance our the carbs cause thats a lot of grease
- Now enjoy, gag on it if you have too…
- talking to your food is encouraged
- after this meal, you will be in heaven…as Iam right now!
- We would like to rename this “The RezX NDN Steak Sandwich! “
