The Angry Bird: Top 5 Political Stories of 2015 (VIDEO)
1. Ding Dong the Witch is Dead – Harper’s Gone
In case you missed Oct 19th – the election happened and the bad man is gone – yes Stephen Harper, conservative incumbent, was removed from power…thank goodness. I have seen some dumb stuff in my life but 10 years of that guy was like all Indigenous people were serving prison time under his watch.
He didn’t just lose; he lost to another majority, the Liberals. This means he was so horrible people moved from his majority and swung it all to another party. That’s a new level of failure. Apparently this was a trend in Canada, as we will see.
2. Trudeau is the Real Deal
Since Trudeau has been in power, which has been 3 months, here is the kind of stuff he has been spotted doing. Day after the election was in the subway taking that to work. Went trick or treating as Luke Skywalker. Greeted the first refugees to come to Canada. Attended the AFN meetings, announced an inquiry into MMIW, and was at the truth and reconciliation wrap-up. Something tells me this guy is for real with his ideas of change – bringing Canada to a real peaceful place with Indigenous people.
3. Reconcile This!
“And we will, in partnership with Indigenous communities, the provinces, territories, and other vital partners, fully implement the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, starting with the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.” (Justin Trudeau Dec 2015)
Hard not to get excited about the idea the Liberals will implement the recommendations of (1) the truth and reconciliation committee and (2) the UNDRIP. They do that and I think we can all rest easier with the autonomy we deserve but were always denied.
4. Sheila North Wilson makes top 30 in Chatelaine Magazine
I have always admired Sheila North Wilson, since she was working with Derek Nepinak. It’s good to see an Indigenous woman get the recognition deserved for making change in her local province and getting the nod as a Grand Chief. Sounds lofty but it’s up to her make it meaningful in the long run.
5. NDP sweeps Alberta
Alberta loved them some NDP – so much so the Conservative incumbent team dropped 60 seats as the NDP gained 49 more (70% of the vote). It saw the first changing of the political guard in 44 years in Alberta. Miracles do happen I guess. The times are a changing in Canada and it’s refreshing to see.
