Editor’s Note: We are pleased to bring you a brand new blog “What does the Fox say?” from one of our own freelancers, Novalee Fox. Fox is currently a student at the First Nations University of Canada and every week or so, she will keep you up to date on University life and more. Here is her first blog, enjoy!

Hello my name is Novalee Fox and I will be blogging for RezXMag.com. I am 3rd year Indigenous Educations and Indian Communication and Arts Student at the First Nation University of Canada. Writing is kind of a hobby of mine and I enjoy doing it!

The hot topic for January is “New Year Resolutions” and everyone wants to start the New Year off healthy or with a goal of some sort. For most us at the University we want to be healthy in all aspects whether it’s trying to lower the number on the scale or even staying away from negative social settings like “the bar”. I am not saying the bar is totally negative, but it depends on how responsible a person is in visiting the bar.

So this semester going forward, my group of friends and fellow students at the university have set the goal to stay away from the University bar called The Lazy Owl, which is conveniently located in the first building in the main entrance when you walk on campus at the University of Regina.

We want to concentrate on our studies and bring up our marks. We are in our third year so we want to start building our professionalism. Because convocation is not too far away when we will set into the wilderness of the working world.

Speaking of the Owl, in one of my classes this semester we talked about the importance of the Owl  and what it symbolizes in First Nations culture. No, not the lazy owl, but the bird itself.

An Owl is a warning, because Owls are rarely seen. But when they are seen, it is usually a warning of some sort.

We also talked about how as students, the social aspect of school sometimes get out of control because the university bar – The Lazy Owl has little specials like “Dollar Draft” on Wednesdays, beer fests and cabarets.

After our discussion about the owl and our discussion about socializing at the university bar the professor then looks at all of and says “So the University bar is called the Lazy Owl, and all of you are First Nation, shouldn’t the name of the bar and the big Owl you see before you enter the bar give you a warning that you should just turn around and not look back?”

We all laughed but it kind of made sense, how ironic that the bar is called the Lazy Owl? Now my Indian instincts should kick in when I am walking by or trying to check out Dollar Draft – I will know that this is a warning.
